Words of Affirmation for How to be Happy in Midlife
Words of affirmations are powerful because when we are making a conscious effort to think about positive thoughts we cannot unconsciously be thinking negative thoughts. This becomes even more important as we get older; negative thinking can become a bad habit if we don’t get focused and become aware of how and what we think about.
There are numerous ways to incorporate affirmations that work into our lives to ensure overall health, happiness and well being. Here are 3 easy and powerful ways to make words of affirmations have the greatest results. 1. Basic words of affirmation using repetition: - Select affirmations that really ring true for you that don’t make you feel silly or feel like you’re just going through the motions or that make you feel like a liar.
- Choose affirmation statements that make you feel good when you say them.
- Repeat them often. The best time to say words of affirmation is early in the morning, right before you go to sleep, and ANY time you are feeling very good. You must use affirmations for more than just a couple of days to be effective.
- Use the present tense – Use I am or I can or I will
- For best results say words of affirmation after meditating. You will be in a state of relaxation and allowing which is the perfect state for the words of affirmation to take effect.
Affirmations don’t have to be complicated. I learned about the value of affirmations when I was in college. I had a professor who taught us that any time we were faced with an overwhelming challenge we just had to keep telling ourselves This is going to be fun and easy. I was amazed at how powerful this very easy statement could have such a big impact. I’d repeat the affirmation repeatedly before exams, before giving speeches, before going on a job interview, and even when going on roller coasters which scare the you know what out of me.
2. Expanded 5-Step Process: I learned one of my favorite methods of using affirmations from How to Get Everything You Ever Wanted by Adrian Calabrese. She teaches a 5-step process which takes the affirmation statements a step further: - Request: Simple positive statement that gets to the point quickly
- Express gratitude: We all know by now the power of appreciation. It draws more things to appreciate toward us.
- Protect: You want to make sure your desires are met safely. Have you ever asked for something and then received it in a fashion that was unpleasing? If you want to lose weight, for instance, you want to do so in an easy and healthy manner. You don’t want to lose weight due to an illness or traumatic event.
- Remove limits: Be open to receive something greater than what you originally asked for
- Finalize: You are confirming that you believe your desire will be met
Let’s use this 5 step affirmation process with an example of wanting to lose weight: - Request: I am the perfect body weight.
- Express gratitude: I thank the Universe (God, Source, etc) for helping me to achieve this in a safe and loving way
- Protect: I achieved the perfect body weight in a safe, healthy, and loving way
- Remove limits: I receive this or something better for the greatest good of all concerned
- Finalize: It is done or So it is
Your words of affirmation would look something like this: I thank the Universe for my perfect body size. The perfect healthy body size is already mine and comes to me safely in a healthy, loving way for the greatest good of all concerned. It is done.
3. Subliminal Affirmations: Too often we start out with good intentions; we use our affirmations several times a day for a few days and then life gets in the way and we forget about it. There are affirmation software programs available that work subliminally behind the scenes while we’re doing our normal computer activities. These are great if you need help focusing on your affirmations on a consistent basis. Learn more here.
Say it. Mean it. Practice it. Manifest it. Enjoy it.
