We women pride ourselves on being able to multi-task. I love men, but doesn’t it seem that they can only do one thing at a time? We can make dinner, help with homework, talk on the phone, and return e-mails at the same time; but just try to get your guy to focus on something else while he’s watching a football game – you may as well be invisible.

Health professionals will almost always tell you to focus on diet and exercise (that’s just about their answer for everything). While this is certainly good advice, it’s only part of the solution.

The single best solution for how to handle stress is to stop focusing on the cause of your stress. The way to do this is to do whatever you can to put your attention on more joyful uplifting things that will give you relief from your stressor. Here are some more valuable tips for reducing stress:

  • Meditation. It doesn't have to be difficult or time consuming. Just minutes a day can have a huge impact on reducing stress.

  • Yoga. The benefits of practicing yoga are significant for both your physical and mental health.

  • Exercise. You know you feel better after you exercise! But... you don't have to go to the gym or run a marathon. Find things you like to do such as dancing, bike riding, or walking.

  • Know your happy triggers so you can refocus on these more positive things when you need to.

  • Keep a journal. This is a great way to focus on the good things in your life and it also helps you release some of the more overwhelming issues that pop up. Write it down and let it go - then watch solutions materialize.
