Positive Effects of the Media
Yes, there really are some positives
There are positive effects of the media today despite a heavy focus on negativity. Although there are plenty examples of bad television, TV can and has played a powerful positive role in bringing people together.
Remember these TV events? Most of these brought us together as a family or as a nation and made us feel good, proud, hopeful or optimistic.- The awe when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon
- Triumph when Michael Phelps won 8 Gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics
- We knew when we watched The Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show that music was forever changed
- An entire generation was influenced when they saw Michael Jackson do the moonwalk on the Live at the Apollo Special
- The 2008 election showed us the importance of using the media to instill hope and optimism.
- Oprah’s worldwide webcast of Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth showed us a new way to engage the world in education
- The magic as we watched the 1969 Mets win the World Series
- Sharing the bringing in of a new year with friends and family as you watch the ball drop at Times Square on New Years Eve
- The bittersweet goodbyes when we watched the final episodes of Cheers, Friends, M.A.S.H., and Seinfeld
- The hope and appreciation we felt when we watched the royal wedding of Charles and Diana
The positive effects of the media are evident by the awareness we now have of issues such as breast cancer prevention, avoiding puppy mills, and taking care of our environment just to name a few. If more people would stop settling for bad television and show the powers that be that it would be more profitable to provide high quality uplifting programs you can bet that’s what would happen. When you remember that being happy and feeling good is your number one priority, you will find it much easier when you seek out positive media influences. Don’t settle for TV shows, movies, magazines, websites or music that makes you feel bad. A small dose of so called entertainment is not worth giving up
feeling good.
Don’t flip through channel after channel of bad television – just turn it off if there’s nothing good on. There are plenty of
fun enjoyable things
you can be doing instead. Really!
