Living in the Present Moment is Key to Your Happiness
Look Forward; Don’t Look Back. You will be much happier living in the present moment instead of dwelling in the past.
We are a society that loves to look at our past. We teach history to young children; we write mountains of books about it; we watch epic movies that romanticize the past; and we take photos of every milestone in our lives so we can never forget the past. For most people, reflecting too often on the past does not serve you well. If you are thinking about your own personal history and flash back to feelings of guilt, anger, bitterness, disappointment or heartache, you’re just bringing the past into your current situation. Why would you want to do that instead of living in the present moment? Leave the past alone; it doesn’t have to continue into your today or tomorrow. Have you had the experience of having a great day and then you have a memory of an incident in your past that brings you bad memories? Then you start thinking about the bad memory more and more and before you know it your good day has turned to crap. Once you start becoming more aware of your thoughts and feelings and how important they are, it becomes easier to put those negative flashbacks on hold and turn to more positive feeling thoughts. Do you know women who: - Can't seem to get over the betrayal or hurt of an ex-husband or boyfriend?
- Bring their unworthiness and insecurities of adolescence into their adulthood?
- Have a hard time letting go of the guilt of leaving their children to go to work?
- Won't let their husbands forget an argument from 10 years ago?
Let it go - Look ForwardThat's not to say that you should never look to the past. Much of what happened yesterday was really good and you want to remember your first kiss, your child's first steps, or a song that you danced to at your Prom. Just make sure you visit these memories and don't stay too long; you want to keep making new memories.
