The First Signs of Menopause

Happy and Menopausal - Is it Possible?

If you’re in your 40s or 50s you may be experiencing the first signs of menopause which is is defined as the absence of menstrual periods for at least one full year.

Are you happy and hopeful going into this new phase of your life or are you going kicking and screaming?

How you answer that question will determine how smooth your menopause experience will be.

As women you are often told that diet, lifestyle and genetics play a major role in determining what kind of physical and emotional impact menopause will play in your life. While this is certainly true to some extent, nothing has more of an impact than your mental attitude and beliefs about menopause and aging.

Menopause is different for everyone but you do NOT have to have a difficult experience during this time of life. It is often referred to as “the change of life”. This always sounds so dramatic to me. I like to think of it more like a natural transition. It is a normal part of every woman’s life and there are millions of women who are living happily and successfully during this transition with very few negative signs and symptoms of menopause.

Unfortunately, there is a prevalent notion that menopause is something you have to get through or suffer through. There's a perception that this is the end of a woman's sexuality and desirability. This absolutely does not have to be the case. There is sex after menopause!

The first signs of menopause usually prompts a whole host of questions about physical and emotional changes taking place.

What is the average age of menopause?

While this is different for many women, the average age of menopause is 51 or 52. Some women start menopause in their 40s and some as late as their 60s.

What are the stages of menopause?

Peri-menopause:

  • These first signs of menopause usually begins 3-5 years before your last menstrual period
  • Lasts about 1 to 2 years after your last menstrual period

Menopause:

  • Menstrual periods completely stop
  • You have not had a period for one full year
  • Natural childbearing is no longer possible

Post-menopause:

  • Begins 1 to 2 years after your last period
  • You no longer menstruate

How long does menopause last?

These stages of menopause can last anywhere from 2 to 10 years from the very first sign such as a missed period. This is different for all women and there are many women who wouldn’t even know they were in menopause if it wasn’t for the cessation of their menstrual cycle -not one hot flash, night sweat or mood swing.
