If You Want to be Happy, Be a Giver
Be a giver. Giving to others is a sure fire way to feel good and it doesn’t have to cost a lot. You can donate your recycled electronics, give a percentage to charity when you sell some of your things on EBay, donate household goods and best of all, you can donate your time. Giving can be as easy as baking cookies for a neighbor, leaving money anonymously for someone who needs it, or simply complimenting a co-worker or a stranger. If you want to be happy make someone else happy. A recent study showed that when we donate time or money to charity we gain the same pleasure as when we eat or have sex - so Give! Give! Give! The important thing is not to be a martyr about it. If you give, give from the heart and don't expect to receive anything in return from the receiver. Believe me; the rewards you get will be so much better than the rewards you give. The recipient of your generosity receives obvious benefits. But what are the benefits to you, the giver? Benefits of giving: - Improved self-worth
- Self-satisfaction
- Decrease stress through a sense of purpose
- Sharing your skills or knowledge
- Learning new skills
- Meeting new people
- Increased empathy for others
- Greater connection to others
- Improving your community
- Tax benefits for financial donations
Need Ideas on How to be a Giver?
HelpOthers.org has a fun, free and easy way to download pay it forward cards to anonymously make someone smile. I’ve always loved the idea of paying it forward ever since I read the book Pay it Forward by Catherine Ryan Hyde years ago (there was also a movie with Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt).
VolunteerMatch.org can help you find opportunities to support your community in areas specific to your interests whether it’s helping animals, the environment, the homeless, church groups, women’s groups, children’s groups, etc.
JustGive.org is a great resource for donating money to your favorite charities. It’s easy and convenient. If you’re ever looking for great gift ideas, how about a charity gift certificate where the recipient can donate the money to their favorite cause? I have found that people love this idea. I mean, how many candles or ties does one person really need anyway?
There are so many ways to serve others. Don’t forget the little things – acts of kindness throughout your day go a long way. Be a giver!
